Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Materials to lead our materials management operations in the aviation mro sector. This key leadership role holds overall responsibility for managing and optimizing all stores inventory and job inventory locations, ensuring materials are efficiently received, shipped, stored, and accounted for. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in inventory control, vendor oversight, and cost-effective procurement strategies, while also ensuring that parts are accurately tracked across contract agencies. With a focus on operational excellence, this role requires a leader capable of driving efficiency, maintaining compliance, and ensuring that all materials are handled to the highest aviation standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads and develops the materials management team, ensuring all inventory operations align with aviation compliance and safety standards.
  • Oversees identification, segregation, and control of serviceable and unserviceable stock, driving accountability and accuracy.
  • Ensures preservation of all parts in inventory, including those with shelf-life or deterioration constraints.
  • Directs the management of stores and job inventory locations, maintaining optimal inventory levels to support maintenance and operational demands.
  • Guides receiving, shipping, and overall inventory control processes to ensure material integrity and timely flow of parts.
  • Monitors materials at contract agency locations, ensuring proper handling, documentation, and quality control.
  • Leads procurement strategy by identifying cost-effective sourcing opportunities and ensuring materials are stored and managed efficiently.
  • Oversees issuance and tracking of special tools and equipment, including shipment coordination to and from external agencies.
  • Develops and manages department budgets, approving expenditures and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Defines short- and long-term departmental goals, organizational structure, and staffing plans to support business growth.
  • Clearly communicates job responsibilities, expectations, and performance goals to team members.
  • Drives training, coaching, and professional development initiatives to build team capability and promote leadership succession.
  • Oversees hiring, onboarding, and retention of qualified personnel, ensuring effective orientation and skill development.
  • Provides continuous performance feedback and formal evaluations, addressing issues promptly and constructively.
  • Maintains a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting trust, accountability, and open communication.
  • Ensures cross-functional coordination, problem-solving, and alignment with company-wide operations.
  • Recommends and implements improvements to policies, procedures, and workflows to enhance efficiency and compliance.
  • Stays current with industry best practices and implements innovations to improve cost-efficiency, productivity, and operational performance.

 

Marginal Job Functions

  • Overall responsibility for distributing to all pertinent department’s miscellaneous technical information or other data that is received by the stock room.
  • Presents updates of departmental activities at management meetings.

Education and Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain, Aviation Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in materials management, preferably within the aviation or aerospace industry.
  • Demonstrated success in managing inventory control, procurement, logistics, and cross-functional team operations.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility to perform duties beyond those listed, as needed by department management.
  • Willingness to work under variable conditions, including multiple shifts or irregular hours, depending on operational needs.

Work Environment

Location: Aircraft maintenance hangar, flightline, and Avionics Shop
Potential Hazards: Exposure to high-intensity noise levels, extreme temperature changes, electrical charges and radar waves, hazardous materials, moving machinery
Protective Equipment Required: Goggles, safety glasses, face shields, ear protection, aprons, gloves, safety harnesses, breathing equipment

  • Employees must perform duties in accordance with company policies and government regulations to preserve life and resources
  • Participate in safety education programs and learn how to recognize and report hazards
  • Employees must report errors, incidents, and accidents honestly as a condition of employment
  • Employees should report unsafe conditions or take reasonable corrective action, then notify a supervisor
  • In case of accidents/incidents, the first employee to observe must alert responders/supervisors and take steps to prevent further injury or damage
